How do you get more council members involved?
One word — delegate! One of the biggest problems with organizations like StuCo is that the same people do all of the work. Officers and committee members need to delegate and give jobs to other members. The best way to delegate is to find what people are good at and give them jobs they can handle and enjoy. Asking them to help by saying “Hey, I know you love this and are good at it and I thought you would be perfect for this job.” Adding a comment like we are counting on you may help. People will flake out so checking on progress is good. However, it is important to let them do their work. Each council member needs to feel like they are contributing or they will float by if the same people do everything, why bother? If someone else takes over why try? People need to be needed and need to know people want them to contribute. It is about delegating and giving people the opportunity to get involved.
Allow everyone to feel that they have a purpose on the council. Also do council relations – activities and outside events to help increase enthusiasm about council.

The key to getting more people involved is being an excited, enthusiastic and motivated leader of the group. Being upbeat is contagious and others will become excited about what you’re excited about. I find the bigger the spectacle I make about what I’m promoting the more excited people get about it. You have to be genuinely pumped about what you’re doing and others will follow. It’s not a perfect solution, but it will help.
